2 Days Danakil Depression Tours
Day 1: Mekele – Hamede Ela Drive to Hamedela via Berhale
The Danakil Depression marks the beginning of one of the most extreme and inhospitable regions in the world. Despite its harsh conditions, the area is breathtaking, with vibrant landscapes and striking colors, particularly in the sulfur springs. This desert region features several points over 100 meters (328 ft) below sea level. As you travel, you’ll pass through the small town of Berhale, a stop for camel caravans before they continue their journey to the northern highlands. Along the way, you’ll witness long camel caravans carrying salt to and from the mines. After a 3-4 hour drive, you’ll arrive at Camp Hamedela, a small village with a population of around 500 people. End the day with a stunning sunset at Dallol, where the landscape’s colors come to life in the fading light.
Overnight camping at Hamed Ela.
Day 2: Morning tour Drive to Ragad (Asebo),
Observe the fascinating process of salt extraction in the Danakil Depression, where locals break the salt from the ground, cut it into rectangular pieces, and load it onto camels. Continue your journey to Dallol, where you’ll explore the stunning landscapes shaped by volcanic activity. Visit Dallol, located 116 meters below sea level—one of the lowest points on Earth—and marvel at the colorful salt mines. Then, visit Lake Assal and follow the camel caravans as they journey through the desert. Experience the unique way of life of the Afar people as you walk with them across the land. After this incredible excursion, drive back to Hamedela before continuing to Mekele.
