Afterward, we will continue our journey to Konso, known for its rich heritage and stunning landscapes.

Day 2: Omo Karo people at Kolcho village on the banks of the Omo river

The Karo people are renowned for their exceptional body painting, a tradition that highlights their vibrant culture. This evening, we’ll visit a Hamar village near our accommodation. The Hamar people take great pride in their appearance, with women often wearing beautifully braided, red-dyed hair and leather skirts adorned with shells. The village remains largely untouched by Western influences, preserving its traditional way of life. Homes are built using local materials like mud, wood, and thatch, and each village is typically made up of an extended family unit of 10-15 huts clustered closely together, with daily life revolving around these communal spaces.

Day 3: Driving across dry sandy plains to Key Afar

We’ll visit a small museum that offers valuable insights into the tribal customs and traditions of the region. Afterward, you can take an optional walk down to the town, where you’ll have the chance to meet locals and experience the vibrant community. We’ll then drive to our accommodation to relax and unwind for the evening.

Travel across the dry plains until reaching Arba Minch, a fertile valley known for its Ensete (false bananas), which gives the town its name, meaning ‘Forty Springs.’ The area is rich in fruit production. Continue your journey into the Chencha Mountains to visit a Dorze village, famous for their exquisite weaving in wool and cotton—perfect for shopping! The Dorze people live in distinctive, tall, beehive-shaped homes. We’ll have the chance to visit one of these homes, witness the weaving process, and learn about the many uses of the ‘false’ banana.
